I believe real ear measurements are the most important tool in the hearing aid fitting process. In fact my favorite thing to do is run real ear measurements on a patient with hearing aids from an outside facility. There are 2 possible outcomes to this approach. One is I act as second opinion and reassure the patient their hearing aids are programmed well. Two, and unfortunately more common, is I show the patient their hearing aids are not amplifying appropriately for their hearing loss, proceed to adjust the aids and try to improve their hearing. I call this optimizing their hearing aids. If after this process the patient is still not satisfied with the performance of their hearing aids, then it would be recommended to proceed with new hearing aid technology. I am in this field to help people not just to sell them new hearing aids.
